Playboy hadn't broken a real cultural barrier since the s, when his magazine kick-started the mainstream commercialization of sex. Guccione had no use for literary pretensions and catered to readers who liked smutty humor; its fantasy women were not only available, but wanton as well. Clearly deciding that mainstream interest in porn was a growing trend, Guccione launched Caligula, a multimillion dollar X-rated Roman costume epic. Using big name talent to transpose his slick magazine visuals to the big screen, Guccione hoped to make cinema history by breaking taboos along with box office records.

It would be the rather sinister Playboy rabbit's penultimate outing on the cover would be the last official year of the Pubic Wars between Penthouse and Playboy although, as we shall see, the battle actually dragged on for several more years. I've got all this and you haven't! Tony Curtis looks on in admiration Playboy started the year quietly with the January issue using much of its pictorial pages for a breathless 14 page photo essay on Hugh Hefner's Playboy Mansion West in Los Angeles. By this time he had virtually given up on his original mansion in chilly Chicago, preferring the all round sun and Hollywood lifestyle of Los Angeles. The article gave the impression of a sybaritic life of excess, naked women, group sex and film stars. Which is exactly what it was like.
Caligula from Johnny Web Uncle Scoopy; Greg Wroblewski All comments refer to the uncut minute version, not the r-rated minute version. This is not just any old copy of a Caligula DVD in my possession, nosireebob. This is the 20th anniversary edition, a jubilee which must have been marked with great festivities at the Guccione place, and undoubtedly attracted more tourists to NYC than that dowdy old Statue of Liberty thing. Interestingly, it is not mentioned on my Year Hallmark Calendar.
Continued from Page 1 Video and Presentation Two versions of Caligula can be found on this three-disc set and both versions feature video presentations that can best be described as a mixed bag. It is a known fact that Guccione went back to re-shoot some new scenes that were added to the original a couple years after principal photography had ended. Mating the new scenes with the original ones had consequences, as the film stocks are different, resulting in vastly different visual quality from one particular scene to another. The photographer's rampant use of the camera zoom effect also lowers the level of detail in a lot of scenes.
